Welcome
The Norwalk Land Trust acquires land and preserves it in its natural state for the benefit of Norwalk, CT, residents now and forever.
We currently steward 33 parcels of woodlands and open space, just over 110 acres.
Norwalk Land Trust Stewardship Sunday
April 14 – Pink Cloud, enter/park at roads end Pink Cloud Lane.
Everyone is invited to join Norwalk Land Trust Stewardship Sunday cleanups. Learn more about our preserves monthly during the Winter of 2024 (every third Sunday). This is a great time to observe the land when foliage is minimal. We will remove invasive plant species as well as some manmade materials that do not belong in a nature preserve (garbage). Great reason to get outside, breath in some fresh air and enjoy the peace a forest can provide.
Tools and garden gloves will be provided. Wear appropriate warm clothing and sturdy shoes. These cleanups will be held from 1pm – 3pm weather permitting. We hope to see you at the last property clean up. For more information, contact Norwalk Land Trust at info@norwalklandtrust.org
Path Building event at the Mary Peatman Preserve March 3, 2024
An energetic group from Temple Shalom, 259 Richards Ave, Norwalk joined with members of the Norwalk Land Trust to begin a trail system through the Mary Peatman Preserve. Through the hard work of the volunteers more than half the trail was laid with wood chips onto a steep incline on February 4th and on the remaining trail on March 3rd.
Mike Mushak, owner of Tuliptree Site Design Inc. Norwalk, dedicated his time designing the trail layout as well as prepping the planted meadow area and leading the volunteer team on February 4th.
Abel Amaya, owner of A&A Lawn Service, opened up the Preserve by removing fencing, supplied wood chips, the use of wheel barrels and additional tools. We thank all involved.
The Margaret and Stephen Holton Bird Sanctuary at Hoyt Island
A highlight at the recent Norwalk Land Trust annual meeting was a wonderful presentation given by NLT Vice President and Stewardship Chair, Mary Verel, about the history and natural attributes, as well as current efforts to protect Hoyt Island. (Enjoy the history text and slideshow at the links below).
You will find interesting the history of Hoyt Island and its transformation to The Margaret and Steve Holton Bird Sanctuary. This story will be an ongoing one. Let’s see what the Spring of 2024 brings.

Outdoor Classroom for 4th Graders
Our 16-acre property at Farm Creek provides a perfect location for a class trip. The 4th grade science curriculum includes concepts that can be explored and seen first-hand. A trained volunteer field guide takes children in groups of 6 on a 1 hour walk exploring wetlands, highlands and open meadow.
This program and bus transportation are free.
Our education program for Spring 2023 wrapped up with 6 schools participating and 393 students exploring Farm Creek Preserve. Thank you to the 23 volunteer guides plus school teachers, without whom we could not have this program. Looking forward to Spring 2024 and the next classrooms of 4th graders.
